Rehabilitation Consultant, Educator and Advocate for Persons with Disabilities

    Mary Novotny RN, MS is a Rehabilitation Consultant, Educator and Advocate for Persons with Disabilities. She is the Founder of Families & Amputees in Motion (FAIM 1979) and the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA 1989). Mary was responsible for establishing two cooperative agreements between The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the ACA. She led the development of the National Limb Loss Information Center (1997) and Co-led a Research Project on Limb Loss with John Hopkins University (1999).

    Mary is an active member of the International Society of Prosthetics & Orthotics (ISPO), the American Nurses Association (ANA), National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON), the Association of Children’s Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinics (ACPOC) and contributes to the National Institute on Disability & Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation & Research (NCMRR), and the National Center for Physical Activity & Disability (NCPAD). She is a Project Director for the Digital Resource Foundation for the O&P Community (DRFOP) currently focused on creating a virtual library of searchable orthotic and prosthetic material and resources available to anyone seeking information at no cost to the user.

    In the past 25 years, Mary has delivered hundreds of lectures and developed and implemented training materials and resources for hundreds of amputees, support groups and other organizations. She is co-author of numerous publications, several videos and book chapters dealing with body image alteration and adaptation to disability.
