The primary aim of this project is to advance the practice of universal design in the development of exercise equipment. While the initial focus of the project is on equipment currently produced by Life Fitness Corporation and provides an unprecedented opportunity to infuse universal design into the products of an industry leader, the project is framed by a number of specific objectives which will be pursued independent of Life Fitness. These include design specifications for identified pieces of resistance and cardiovascular exercise equipment. The following phases structure the major project deliverables and milestones over the duration of development:
Phase 1 will focus on customer needs and the requirements of the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) Stage 2 standards (see our D4 Project for more information on the Inclusive Fitness Initiative) as they apply to strength equipment in the Life Fitness Cable Motion Dual Adjustable Pulley (CMDAP) and Cable Motion Cable Column (CMCC) equipment specifically and more generally to embodiment design for cardiovascular (CV) equipment. In addition to the CMDAP and CMCC platforms, there are new strength equipment designs being pursued throughout the industry. The new equipment is lighter and less expensive, but structurally more involved, which presents particular challenges to meet some of the most fundamental IFI Stage 2 requirements. In particular, we will consider requirement 1.1.1 that “the frame and other structural parts of the equipment shall not interfere with easy transfer and access onto or egress from the equipment,” and requirement 1.2.3 that equipment “must allow the seat to be re/moved (sic) to permit users to exercise from their wheelchair.” The design concepts and specifications developed in this project will address these issues for all strength equipment platforms under review. The universal design of CV equipment will likewise target the IFI Stage 2 standards which have posed particular challenges for manufacturers, building on the successful accessory kit concept described in developed previously and being evaluated in Project R1.
