Project R1 investigates the biomechanics and physiological outcomes resulting from use of a proof of concept device developed during the previous funding cycle. This study, which addresses access, participation and health and function strands of our R&D framework, has importance well beyond evaluation of the device. The proof of concept demonstrated that common pedal-driven cardiovascular exercise equipment could be modified at low cost to provide accessible exercise for people who use wheelchairs without changing the standard operation of the machine or increasing the footprint of the equipment. More importantly, the motion of the added exercise (rowing or poling) may be safer and more beneficial for people who use manual wheelchairs.
