Peter Axelson  Peter Axelson, M.S.M.E., is Founder and Director of Research and Development of Beneficial Designs, Inc., a rehabilitation engineering design firm. He has over 30 years of personal experience as a wheelchair user and has extensive experience designing recreation equipment for people with disabilities, such as water and snow skis and training devices, a two-wheeled handcycle, a canoe seat, a rowing ergometer for use from a wheelchair, a mono ski fitness trainer and many other modifications to existing exercise equipment. In addition, he has led Beneficial Designs in the development of many universal design guidelines for recreation environments and facilities including amusement park rides, Arial tramway lifts, ski area facilities, outdoor recreation environments, information systems, trails and shared use paths. He was centrally involved in the development of industry guidelines for the following projects: Playground Surfaces - ASTM F 1951 - 99; Sidewalks and Trails - The current recommended "best practices" for the UD of sidewalks and trails for the Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration; and Ski Areas Programs and Services - RESNA American National Standard, Volume 1: Requirements & Test Methods; and the Outdoor Developed Areas - the Regulatory Negotiation Committee of the Access Board which uses a UD approach to develop guidelines for the design of accessible trails, beaches, picnic and camping facilities. Mr. Axelson is the director on the D4 project, Development of Uniform Standards for Accessible Fitness Equipment. He will oversee the stakeholder consultations, drafting of the UDFE Guidelines and template for modifying existing equipment, and will complete the evaluation of guidelines compliance with relevant ASTM Standards.
